I am a friend / relative

We understand that making the initial steps to get help can be difficult and we are sometimes approached by friends or relatives wishing to refer on behalf of somebody else. While we are happy to accept referrals from a third party, we would first need to obtain consent from the person being referred that they are happy for us to take and store their details given by a friend or relative on their behalf.

If you wish to refer somebody else to our service, we recommend calling the admin team on 0300 123 0542 between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm from Monday to Friday with the person you wish to refer present with you. They will need to come to the phone briefly to give verbal consent to us taking a referral for them from yourself. Once they have given this, we can continue to take their details from you.

I am a healthcare / other professional

Before referring a service user to Talking Mental Health Derbyshire we ask that you take a few moments to read our 'Information for Professionals' page which describes our guidelines for referring to the service and lists the conditions which we can and cannot treat.

Once you are familiar with our guidelines, please fill in our 'referral form for healthcare professionals', completing as much information as you can as this will help us determine the most appropriate care for the patient.

Call us

If you prefer, you can call us on 0300 123 0542 and a member of our admin team will be happy to take your details and process a referral to our service for you.

Can't wait?

Should you feel that you need to speak to someone urgently, we recommend that you contact your GP surgery and speak to the duty doctor. If your GP surgery is closed, the following organisations may be able to offer you support:

  • NHS: 111

  • Samaritans: 116 123

  • Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) – for men: 0800 58 58 58 – 5pm to midnight every day

  • Hopeline UK – for people under the age of 35: 0800 068 41 41 – Monday to Friday 10am to 10pm, weekends 2pm to 10pm, bank holidays 2pm to 5pm

  • Childline – for children and young people under 19: 0800 1111 (the number will not show up on your phone bill)

  • Silver Line – for older people: 0800 4 70 80 90

Learn more about these organisations on the NHS website.

After a referral from a health professional, or a self-referral has been made, you will speak to a member of our friendly administration team.

They will take or confirm general demographic details with you, such as your name, address and telephone number. This information, along with any notes made by your therapist, will be kept securely on our confidential records system.

Initial assessment

You will then be offered an initial assessment appointment with one of our therapists.  This appointment is usually face-to-face, although telephone appointments are also offered.  At this appointment the therapist will get a general idea of your current difficulties and together you will make a decision about whether the service may be of benefit for you at this current time.

Questionnaire

Either posted to you before, or given to you at this appointment, you will also complete a short questionnaire about the symptoms you have been experiencing.  This gives both you and the therapist an idea of how much your low mood and/or anxiety has been impacting on you and your every day life.  In subsequent therapy sessions, if offered, we will continue to monitor your progress each week using these questionnaires.

Treatment and support

If it is agreed that you may benefit from treatment you will be placed on a waiting list. Waiting lists can vary depending on type of therapy and geographical location, and at assessment you will be given an approximate idea of how long you will need to wait. We offer a range of therapies, including counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy.

If we do not offer treatment, we are often able to signpost you to another service that may better serve your needs.  Therapy requires a strong commitment to change and often things may feel worse before they get better, our therapist will discuss with you whether this is the right time to start a therapy programme. On occasion we may also ask for other issues to be addressed first before therapy begins, for example drug and/or alcohol issues.

Involving your GP

Finally, we will make sure that your GP is aware of your treatment plan, or of our suggestions for alternative treatment, by letter after your assessment appointment, and also update them at the end of therapy.

We are able to offer an assessment to anybody over the age of 16 years, registered with a GP in Derbyshire or Derby City.
