About the unit

Based on the Chesterfield Royal Hospital site, the Hartington Unit is the Trust’s main inpatient service for Chesterfield and North Derbyshire residents with acute mental health needs. The Hartington Unit consists of three adult (and older adult) acute inpatient wards called Morton Ward, Pleasley Ward and Tansley Ward, an outpatient service, occupational therapy team and a crisis resolution and home treatment service as well as the psychiatric liaison team for the North of Derbyshire.

Morton Ward, Pleasley Ward and Tansley Ward are mixed 24 bedded adult acute inpatient wards, with Pleasley Ward also catering for older adults. Each ward is dedicated to providing our patients with individualised care plans tailored to meet their specific needs which promotes both mental and physical health. Regular protected 1:1 therapeutic engagement time between nurse and patient is given a high priority to ensure that inpatients feel fully involved in their care.

The nursing and medical teams enjoy a close working relationship which enables an improved patient experience. There are also close relations with the crisis team, community mental heath teams and occupational therapy and recreational workers; this all ensures a smooth care pathway from one service to another.

The outpatient service based at the Hartington Unit provides consultant advice, assessment, diagnosis and treatment to people over the age of 16 with a mental health problem, who are referred by their GP. Home assessments are provided at the request of the GP where it is appropriate.
