Managing Emotions Group (MEP)
The Managing Emotions Programme aims to help people who experience significant difficulties with changing emotions. In the 1-session Workshop (lasting 2½ hours), we discuss why we have emotions, their function and what happens when it feels difficult to manage. We also introduce you to some basic coping skills. In the 4-session course we help you to understand emotions in greater depth, looking at their different components and levels of intensity. You will also learn strategies that may help you manage your emotions in different situations. The 8-session long course follows on from the 1-session workshop and 4-session short course. The long course aims to help people develop a greater understanding of what triggers intense emotions and how to respond.
It covers topics such as:
- Emotional awareness: where you will learn more about emotions and why we have them
- Emotional regulation: looking at how to build resilience, taking time for self-care, and different sources of stress
- Acknowledging unhelpful thoughts: recognising and challenging thought processes, reducing distress and increasing awareness
- Mindfulness skills: learning to be aware of thoughts, emotions, feelings, and actions, and being in the present moment
- Acceptance and values: being aware of emotions and exploring what is important to you in your life
- Understanding schemas: learning about how we make sense of information from our environment
- Communication and interpersonal effectiveness: understanding how we relate to others and others relate to us, including verbally and non-verbally
- Looking to the future: reviewing skills learned and further thought for how these can be used in day-to-day life
