A local mental health team have been shortlisted for a National Dementia Care Award for innovative approach to improve health outcomes for dementia patients.
The Mental Health Liaison Team, based at the Royal Derby Hospital, has been shortlisted in the ‘Outreach Category,’ which recognises innovative outreach initiatives developed and implemented to support individuals affected by dementia.
The National Dementia Care Awards celebrate outstanding practice in dementia services and recognise a commitment to deliver outcome focused, person centred care for people living with dementia.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the suspension of specialist diagnostic services led to a drop in dementia diagnosis rates in the community which resulted in an increase of requests for memory assessments for people presenting in crisis who required placement at discharge.
The Mental Health Liaison Team responded by ensuring high-quality memory assessments and new referral pathways were in place, which ultimately contributed to a more efficient and effective way of diagnosing dementia.
Helen Croft, Clinical Lead for Older Adults Services at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, was at the forefront of the project’s success. Helen said: “This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to our team’s dedication and innovative efforts to support individuals with dementia, especially during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We remain committed to improving the lives of those affected by dementia through high quality care and effective outreach initiatives, to help promote better health outcomes for those concerned.”
Tumi Banda, Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals, Quality, and Patient Experience at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We are exceptionally proud of our Mental Health Liaison Team for being shortlisted for the national Dementia Care Awards.
“This recognition reflects their strong commitment to providing exceptional care and support to individuals with dementia, especially during this unprecedented time. Their innovative approach and dedication have made a significant impact on our patients' lives, and this nomination is a well-deserved acknowledgment of their hard work and compassion."
Winners are expected to be announced during a ceremony at the Hilton London Bankside hotel on 19 June 2025.
