February is LGBT+ History Month. In 2024, the theme was ‘Medicine – #UnderTheScope’ and the focus was on the contribution made by members of the LGBT+ community to the field of medicine and healthcare, both historically and today.

To coincide with LGBT+ History Month, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust produced a short video for healthcare professionals, looking at the experiences of trans people who are trying to navigate the healthcare system. Watch the video below.

About the video

In a 2018 Stonewall report, 41% of trans people attempting to access general healthcare services felt that healthcare staff lacked understanding of trans health needs. This is likely to affect both the physical and mental wellbeing of trans people.

The video includes the real-life experiences of a young trans person and their parents, who are played by actors.

It also includes some simple advice for healthcare professionals on how to ensure trans people receive care that feels inclusive. This advice is shared by Joe – a senior nurse at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS FT – and George, the 2023/24 Chair of the Trust’s LGBT+ Staff Network.

This video is being shared with healthcare professionals in the hope that it will give greater insight and stimulate discussion. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video.
