To me hope means having a feeling of confidence and a feeling of happiness. Hope is also a feeling of joyfulness and calmness. My friends are a big part of my life. If I’m feeling worried, sad or nervous my friends will be there for me and they will know how to cheer me up and make me happy and joyful again. Art helps my wellbeing because it can calm you down and can stop you from feeling negative emotions. Instead of negative emotions it makes me feel positive emotions like happy, excited or joyful. Art can also be inspiring to children and adults to never give up and to persevere. Some people may have conditions, or may not be able to do certain things, but art helps you to never stop believing in yourself.

Art makes me feel calm and relaxed and I enjoy doing it.  I do a lot of drawing and colouring as I like it.  The word Hope means to me to think about positive things in the future. 

I really enjoy drawing and making pictures, it makes me feel happy.

I love drawing because as I don’t have many hobbies, drawing is a very calming activity, for my creativity to flow. It relaxes me and there is no right answer in art. I think that you must have hope in everything (even the little things) because you never know what may happen next. To me hope is achievement and trying your hardest with no cheating.

Erin likes to create art because she has a very fizzy mind and is constantly on the go but when she is making her art, she is able to sit still, her mind calms and she focuses. Erin has loved drawing since being very little and creating art has always been her quiet place and the thing she goes to do when she is struggling with her emotions.

Hi, my name is Martha. Art helps my wellbeing in the sense that it calms me and helps me express my feelings. My picture symbolises hope [in my opinion] because it is meant to be a girl in an NHS hospital making a wish on a star. Finally, as this is a competition run by the NHS I tried to make it look like a hospital to raise awareness.

The future holds a lot of uncertainty but also a lot of promise for me. Growing up with my daughter is my ray of hope for the future, I have had so many experiences that I would not have normally had because she was in my life. I wish to continue learning about her and myself as she grows up to be a wonderful human being. I drew a special moment that I hope to experience with her in the future when we both learn how to swim finally.

Paroxysm — an outpouring of emotions. That is how I would describe what art means to me. After many years of domestic abuse, both verbal and physical, I finally found the strength to break free. I had lost so much of myself and needed an outlet—something that was mine, something that could help me rediscover my self-worth. I bought paint, canvas and brushes. Setting everything up on the kitchen floor, I would pour the paint, mix it to the right consistency, choose a technique, dip my brush and make that first stroke across the canvas. With every brushstroke came hope. Hope because I had survived. Hope because I was creating something beautiful from nothing. Hope because, slowly, I was discovering that I was stronger than I had ever believed. Art became my safe place—a space without judgement, where I could express emotions, I couldn't always put into words. The excitement of not knowing what might emerge, followed by the overwhelming sense of achievement when I stepped back and saw the finished piece, became part of my healing.

Every canvas holds a little piece of my journey. Art gave me my voice, my freedom and, most importantly, HOPE.

Ray of hope represents a phoenix, a mythical bird rising towards the light. It symbolises resilience, strength, and new beginnings, reminding us that there is always hope and an opportunity to start again. Creating this artwork provided a sense of calm and relaxation, offering a welcome escape from the pressures of everyday life.

My painting shows what a “ray of hope” means to me through my own experience…. “ Small Steps “ The dark colours at the bottom represent the pain, struggles and difficult times I’ve been through. The line running through the painting represents the journey back towards hope and recovery. The footprints placed throughout the painting show every step along that journey, reminding us that every step forward, no matter how small, matters. As the painting becomes brighter and more colourful, it represents healing, growth and finding happiness again. The little stars and rays of light show that hope is always there, even if it’s only a tiny glimmer. The swirls at the top represent how recovery isn’t a straight path. There are twists, setbacks and challenges, but they all become part of the journey. This painting reflects my own experience and reminds me that even in the darkest times, there is always hope and a way forward. I found my Hope again in 2017 and continue to find daily glimmers and take those small steps every day.

We have named our piece “Lend each other a Hand” We did this by starting with a blank piece of paper with the theme ‘Ray of Hope’ in mind. We then had a minute each to start drawing before we passed it to the next person. By lending each other a hand in our creation, we came out with a beautiful spontaneous art piece representing hope. It was inspiring to see everyone come together and enjoy their time in the art session. This reflects the term ‘Hope’ as together as peers we supported each other through art. Beginning with a blank piece of paper that flourished into a unique piece. Hope is being inspired by others to give you the confidence in your journey and our piece of art will be cherished by all involved.

Our artwork reflects the journey many people experience following a dementia diagnosis. At first, it can feel as though dark clouds have gathered. There are questions, uncertainty, and emotions such as fear, confusion, denial, and worries about memory. We wanted to reflect these feelings because they are real and often shared. In time, through coming together as a group and finding support things begin to change. Meeting others who understand what we are going through helps to ease the sense of isolation, and slowly the clouds begin to lift. We begin to realise that although dementia changes life, it does not take away who we are. As this sense of support and connection grows, so too does hope. The sunshine at the centre of our artwork represents this. It is made from hundreds of individual pieces, just as our group is made up of many unique people. Every ray has been created by someone connected to the group – people living with dementia, carers, loved ones, volunteers, and staff. Each contribution is different, but together they form something bright, strong, and full of hope. Within the artwork, you will also find words that remind us what truly matters: love, peace, laughter, friendship, family, inclusion, communication, perseverance, and hope. These are the things that help us move forward and continue to live well. Our Ray of Hope is a reminder that a dementia diagnosis is not the end of the story. With the right support, kindness, and understanding, the clouds can lift, new friendships can grow, and hope can shine through. “Alone we made a piece. Together we made a Ray of Hope.”

SEWA is a ladies' group for South Asian elders of various backgrounds, where we gather to create, catch up with friends, and do activities. For the ladies, art is a way to keep creating, sharing, and expressing themselves. It brings us together, supports to give a sense of purpose, and provides an outlet when words are at times difficult to find. What does hope mean to us you ask? Hope, to us, is found in the simple things that light up our everyday lives: cooking our favourite meals and sharing them with our loved ones, time spent creating, doing meaningful work, prayer, the light of God, and the love and light that is our family and grandchildren. These moments may seem small, but they shine brightly for us. Our piece, ‘Our Beacons in the Dark’, reflects the things that guide, comfort, and bring us joy, helping us find light even on the more challenging days.
