Emotional wellbeing and support

Derby Deaf Services Team

The Derby Deaf Services Team is a specialist social work service for Deaf and Deafblind people. The team works with:

  • Deaf children who communicate through British Sign Language (BSL) or spoken English or who use different sign languages such as Latvian Sign Language.

  • Deaf adults whose first or preferred language is BSL.

  • Deafblind adults and children.

  • Deaf and Deafblind people with additional needs such as mental health, autism, learning difficulties or physical disabilities.

For information, the Deaf Team does not work with Makaton users and does not provide interpreting services as they are Social Workers.

They provide information and advice about accessing services available to the wider community and run drop in sessions Mondays: 10:00 - 12:00 and Fridays: 13:00 - 16:00.

They offer Deaf adults and parents of Deaf children appointments to help with filling in forms, such as Personal Independence Payments forms (PIP), or making long phone calls to claim benefits, usually on Wednesday mornings.

Communication Unlimited

We offer fully-qualified, professional British Sign Language interpreters to ensure that Deaf and Deafblind people can communicate effectively with users of English and vice versa. A registered charity, Communication Unlimited is based in Derby which means we are well positioned to work throughout Derby and Derbyshire. Put simply, our experienced interpreters listen to the spoken English and interpret it into British Sign Language, then watch the sign language before translating it into spoken English. We pride ourselves on delivering a specialist service, helping clients choose the right service or interpreter for them.

Whether you are a Deaf person who requires BSL support for a one-off appointment, or a health professional or business who needs on-going interpreting support, our team can help.

We also are able to advise you to improve your services with the Deaf community or your Employees.
