People receiving care at Bluebell Ward, an older adult inpatient mental health unit operated by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in Chesterfield, are enjoying home grown produce and the wellbeing benefits of gardening. The sessions are helping to support their overall health by encouraging gentle activity, boosting mood and providing a calming sense of routine and purpose, thanks to a flourishing occupational therapy project. joandjames2.jpg

Led by Occupational Therapist, Jo Townshend, and Occupational Therapy Assistant, James Coote, gardening sessions have become a popular activity for patients throughout the summer.

The team, with the support from patients, have nurtured a range of fruit and vegetables in the ward's occupational therapy garden, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and chillies.

The produce is now being used in cooking sessions in the occupational therapy kitchen, helping patients take part in activities such as pizza making while developing practical skills and confidence.

Gardening is widely recognised for its therapeutic benefits. As well as encouraging gentle physical activity, it can help improve mood, reduce stress and provide a sense of purpose, all of which can support a person's recovery journey. The activity also offers opportunities for mindfulness and sensory engagement through exposure to nature, bright colours and pleasant scents.

Patients have shown strong commitment to the project, regularly tending to the garden and continuing to care for the plants during periods of hot weather.

One patient who regularly attends the sessions said: "I really enjoy having the opportunity to get out into the fresh air and surround myself in nature. I find watching the plants grow and looking after them is a positive distraction. I feel much better for being in the outdoors and the peace that gardening brings me."

Jo said: "Patients at Bluebell always look forward to our gardening sessions, particularly during the warmer weather, where they take part in regular activities such as watering and nurturing the plants. The project highlights the important role that meaningful occupational activities can play in supporting wellbeing, recovery and independence for patients receiving care at Bluebell Ward.”
