Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to share that its wards for older people with mental health problems have been rated as ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection visit in April and May 2025.

The Trust provides inpatient care for older people in Derbyshire with acute mental health needs at three locations: Bluebell Ward in Chesterfield and Tissington House in Derby both offer support to those with functional mental health illnesses, like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or severe anxiety or depression; while Cubley Court in Derby provides support to those with acute needs related to dementia or other organic mental health conditions. This was the first assessment of all three units, following the opening of Bluebell Ward in January 2025.

The CQC inspection report, published today, highlights how staff are compassionate and provide person-centred care, supported by a positive culture that prioritises wellbeing. Inspectors also praised strong safeguarding practices, consistent staffing, and efforts to keep people connected with loved ones and their communities.

Mark Powell, Chief Executive at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Patient care is a top priority for our Trust, and we take the findings of every CQC inspection report extremely seriously.

“I’m pleased that the outcomes of the recent CQC inspection at Bluebell Ward, Tissington House and Cubley Court are so positive. The report emphasises that staff consistently demonstrate a commitment to both mental and physical wellbeing, showing genuine care, kindness and respect toward those they support.

“I am proud that Derbyshire Healthcare’s positive workplace culture has been highlighted in the report as this is something we actively advocate for across all our services.

“The report shares a small number of minor improvements and recommendations that we are committed to addressing, making our older adults services even better in the future.

“Thank you to all our colleagues at Derbyshire Healthcare for their ongoing support and dedication, which has resulted in this positive report.”
