Since April 2024, the 24/7 Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline and Support Service has been offering local people two ways to call the team: via an 0800 number and via NHS 111.
From 1 July 2026, the only way to contact the helpline will be by calling NHS 111, and then selecting the ‘mental health’ option (option 2).
The 0800 number – 0800 028 0077 – will be switched off on this date.
Using only NHS 111 is the approach that NHS England is recommending across the country. When people dial 111 and select ‘mental health’, they are put through to their local helpline team, who can tell them about local support services. Having one number for the Derbyshire helpline also simplifies the call handling process for the helpline team, meaning the team can respond to calls more effectively.
If anyone calls the 0800 number after 1 July, they will hear a message asking them to dial 111 and to then select the ‘mental health’ option. In Derbyshire, this is option 2, but the option number may vary in other parts of the country.
The separate professionals’ line, for health and social care professionals to call, will remain unaffected and the number will remain the same.
Similarly, the line serving the Deaf community will continue to operate as usual. First, call 111 using the SignVideo app or SignVideo website. This will connect the user via video link to a BSL interpreter. The BSL interpreter will also need the name of the nearest town or city the individual is calling from. Learn more about this on the helpline page.
The helpline is just one of the options for local people with urgent mental health needs. There are also crisis drop-in services and safe havens; learn more on the help in a crisis page.
