A Consultant Psychiatrist from Derbyshire was interviewed by RCPsych (Royal College of Psychiatrists) trainee editor Ayomipo Amiola for a podcast about ‘Seminars in General Adult Psychiatry’, which features work by many eminent academics and psychiatrists from across the country.
Dr Paul Rowlands is a Consultant Psychiatrist for the Chesterfield Community Mental Health Team at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, who support adults with mental health needs in the community, helping people to access care closer to home and reduce the need for hospital admission where possible.
The revised Third edition of ‘Seminars in General Adult Psychiatry’ was jointly published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Cambridge University Press in April 2024. The book is a key text for psychiatry trainees studying for their MRCPsych exams (postgraduate medical qualification in psychiatry) and is also used by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals for continuing professional development.
The book is updated regularly to keep pace with modern practice and theory, covering developments in the understanding of mental disorders, service delivery, risk assessment and management, collaborative care plans and trauma-informed care.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the process of editing the book, getting together with the other two editors and discussing the content,” he said.
“When people write a textbook, it is charting a point in time, recording the way people think about a topic. The first edition of the book was published 20 years ago, and it is fascinating when you look at how things have changed.
“As editors we know that at some point it will probably be rewritten again and the way we do things now will change, but that is really exciting.”
