Hayley Lawrence, Senior Clinical Nurse Educator at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, is a finalist for the British Forces in Business Awards for her contributions to clinician education and leadership of the Armed Forces Staff Network, supporting veterans, service members and their loved ones.
The British Forces in Business Awards is the world’s largest celebration of military veterans who have gone on to achieve excellence in civilian careers. The awards recognise the outstanding contributions of the Armed Forces community to British employers and the wider economy.
Hayley brings over 20 years’ experience from her time in the military, where she served as both a combat medical technician and mental health nurse. She was medically discharged following a serious incident during her service and has since successfully transitioned into a healthcare career outside of the army.
Hayley said: “Leaving the army was tough; I wasn’t ready, but my health forced me to. Now I’m a Clinical Nurse Educator at the Trust, teaching future psychiatrists and mental health professionals, which I am extremely grateful to have.”
Hayley is now Chair of the Trust’s Armed Forces Staff Network – an employee support network run jointly with another NHS Trust, Derbyshire Community Health Services, which ensures that the Trust is a great place to work if you are ex-forces or a reservist, with pro-active recruitment and support for people leaving the Forces. The network is also open to reserves, veterans, cadet instructors, family members and allies, in line with the NHS commitment to prioritise care for veterans and beyond.
“The Armed Forces Staff Network provided tailored support, helping me adjust during a challenging period, and I’m thankful for their help. I stepped into the role of Vice Chair just two weeks after joining the Trust and later became Chair of the Armed Forces Staff Network following my return from maternity leave. Since then, I’ve led a range of initiatives to support the Armed Forces community, from organising insight days at Army barracks and annual celebration events, to leading fundraising for military charities and supporting our Veteran Aware reaccreditation and gold status.
“While many networks deliver similar activities, for me it’s been about navigating a completely different environment to what I was used to, and using my experience to create opportunities, build connections, and ensure others feel supported”, she added.
Justine Fitzjohn, Director of Corporate Affairs at Derbyshire Healthcare and Executive Sponsor of the network, praised Hayley for all her efforts and commitment to the Armed Forces Community.
Justine said: “It comes as no surprise to hear that Hayley has received further recognition for an award at this year’s British Forces in Business Awards. Hayley continues to lead the network in a positive direction, using her lived experience to support those in similar circumstances.
“It is her tenacious approach that has landed her this national recognition. Derbyshire Healthcare is very lucky to have her support and guidance both as a colleague and dedicated Chair of the Trust’s Armed Forces Staff Network.”
Winners will be announced at an award ceremony set to take place on 25 June.
