DEED (Delivering Excellence Every Day) - July nominations
Our DEED nominations are divided into five categories that are aligned to our Trust priorities and vision.
Below are the nominations for July that most closely meet the criteria for each category, as described on the DEED nomination page on our website. All nominations will be in the running for a DEED of the month.

Mel Spelman, Ward Manager, Sycamore Ward
I would like to nominate Mel as I think she is an exceptional manager. She is always approachable and if staff have any concerns, she will do her best to address any issues. Mel also ensures she finds time to interact with the patients on the ward, often building a very good therapeutic relationship with them. Patients and staff are her number one priority, and she always ensures everyone is safe. Mel is a true asset to the team and Trust.

Miriam Stanyon, Research Manager, Albany House
Miriam consistently goes above and beyond, quietly delivering exceptional work behind the scenes. She is the unsung hero of the Psychiatry Teaching Unit, producing high-quality reports and evaluations that showcase our innovation and impact. Miriam places lived experience at the heart of everything she does, working collaboratively with colleagues, community partners, and our lived experience volunteers. Her dedication, professionalism and humility embody our Trust values, and her invaluable contribution is noticed and deeply appreciated by the team.

Georgia has been an amazing assessor throughout my placement. From the beginning, she made me feel like part of the team and never just "the student". She's always taken the time to involve me in learning opportunities, answer my questions and explain things in a way that's helped me grow in confidence. She's so understanding and patient and has always encouraged me, even when I doubted myself. Georgia’s bubbly personality brightens every shift and she is everything an assessor should be. I feel so lucky to have had her support.

Cydney provides exceptional support to both her colleagues and our patients and is always there during difficult times with encouragement, guidance, and a calm presence. Dr Zaim is a focused and highly professional member of the Wren Ward team. He works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and actively involves nursing staff in clinical decision-making. He is well-organised and completes tasks, including referrals, in a timely manner. Dr Zaim plays a key role in ensuring team efficiency and maintaining high standards of patient care.

Dr Saba Noor, Specialist Doctor, Wren Ward
I am delighted to nominate Dr Saba for her outstanding clinical excellence, leadership, and commitment to patient-centred care. Dr Saba consistently demonstrates initiative and sound clinical judgment. In acute situations, she assesses patients promptly and makes decisive, safe clinical decisions, balancing risk appropriately while maintaining patient safety as her priority. Her ability to act in a timely manner under pressure has directly improved patient outcomes. She is an exemplary team player and collaborates effectively within the multidisciplinary team. Dr Saba actively listens to all voices and opinions, valuing contributions from nursing, and support staff to create cohesive, person-centred care.

Response Team, Carsington Unit
I would like to nominate Abbie Lloyd, Hazel Mukarakate, James Swinn, Vanessa Burton and Sabina Shabir for their outstanding professionalism and teamwork during a recent incident. They responded immediately, remained calm under pressure and worked together to provide exceptional care. Their quick actions, clinical skills and communication played a significant part in helping the situation. They showed compassion, courage and unwavering dedication throughout the incident, supporting each other and those around them. Their actions truly reflect the Trust's values and deserve recognition through a DEED award.

Nina Wiggins, Healthcare Assistant, Alcohol Care Team
Nina is a healthcare assistant working in the Alcohol Care Team at the Royal Derby Hospital. Nina recently organised a stall within the acute hospital to promote her team and provide psychoeducation on alcohol and substance misuse for Alcohol Awareness Week. She enthusiastically organised the whole event by herself, arranging for posters, giveaways and manned the stall on her own. Great work from Nina who showed all that leadership is a universal and not only the domain of those in formal leadership positions.

Mental Health Helpline, Communications and IT/Telecommunication Team
The Mental Health Helpline has made significant changes to how the service is being delivered, removing the 0800 option and introducing a text message option alongside the 111#2 existing route for patients to access mental health support. The team, including support from the communications team and the IT/Telecommunication team, have worked incredibly hard to ensure this new service option went live on time, working together every day to make this happen. I'm incredibly proud of the teamwork, the commitment and the problem solving the teams have showed during this time - thank you so much!

Luke Steel, Registered Nursing Associate, Ward 36 Radbourne Unit
Luke consistently demonstrates professionalism, compassion and dedication to both patient and colleague wellbeing. In July, Luke volunteered to support Ward 35 during an exceptionally challenging shift, helping to provide cover while colleagues attended an away day. Throughout the day, Luke worked alongside the duty team to manage several complex incidents, remaining calm, responsive, and patient-focused under pressure. Luke communicated effectively with colleagues and other organisations.

Margie Cowley, Deena Jenkinson, Lili Smith, Admin team, London Road Resource Centre
Margie, Deena, and Lili are an invaluable part of the team at London Road Resource Centre. They work tirelessly to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the reception area, always demonstrating professionalism, positivity, and dedication. They consistently go above and beyond to support both patients and colleagues, managing the front desk efficiently while coordinating busy clinics, answering telephone calls, and handling any challenges that arise with confidence and care. Their friendly and approachable manner has helped them build excellent relationships with staff and patients alike, creating a welcoming environment for everyone who visits. Their commitment, teamwork, and outstanding work ethic make a significant contribution to the success of the Resource Centre, and they are truly deserving of recognition.

Tom is exceedingly good at his job; nothing is too big or small. He is very approachable and caring and makes you feel at ease, he is definitely a person to go to for help. He is an asset to the NHS.

Connie ensured her patient was reviewed due to a decline in their physical health. She spent the majority of her shift ensuring their safety, taking physical observations and offering reassurance throughout. She continued to provide excellent patient care, supporting the patient at A&E and ensuring they returned to the ward safely. She liaised with the duty doctor, bleep holder, secure transport and A&E staff to make sure her patient was seen as quickly as possible to reduce anxieties, making a plan before their arrival. You were amazing!!

Eve consistently goes above and beyond in her role as a physical health practitioner, placing patients at the heart of everything she does. She travels across the county, responding to every request with positivity and dedication. I would like to nominate Gemma for the exceptional care, compassion and dedication she showed while supporting a person with a learning disability through a diagnosis. Gemma went above and beyond to ensure the person understood their condition, received appropriate reasonable adjustments, and remained at the centre of care decisions. She provided compassionate support to the individual and family, advocated tirelessly for their needs, and coordinated care across multiple services. Her kindness, professionalism and commitment made a significant positive difference during an incredibly difficult time and exemplified the Trust's values.

I just want to recognise Lissa for always going above and beyond. Even on busy shifts she will go out of her way to support students and new staff, complete additional paperwork or even eat her meal alongside distressed patients and engage with them meaningfully, always showing compassion and empathy. Nikki has gone above and beyond in her role as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) throughout my placement. She is genuinely one of the best HCAs I have worked alongside, and I have seen the difference she makes to patients every day. She always puts patients first, taking the time to treat each person with dignity, respect and compassion. Nikki does not just complete tasks; she takes the time to understand patients and recognise what they need. She is a true example of the important role HCAs play and the positive impact they can have on the people they care for.

Katie is a sterling member of the Records Team. I want to specifically praise her for her work in preparing a subject access request for a service user who was unable to access their record electronically. I also want to highlight the excellent work she does in keeping the Trust at over 97% compliant with their Data Security and Protection training - no mean feat! Katie is always bright and bubbly and is a really positive person to work with. She looks out for the whole team. Thank you!

Kath Carrol, Healthcare Assistant, Ward 36, Radbourne Unit
Kath is an absolute pleasure to work with. She consistently shows dedication and genuine care for both patients and her colleagues. The way she interacts with patients with genuine interest and listens to them is absolutely amazing to witness. Kath is always the first person to help and support every single member of staff including domestics during meal times, every shift without fail. Her positive personality is such a joy to be around and uplifting to all around her.

David Walker, Consultant Psychiatrist, North Dales Community Mental Health Team
Dr Walker supported a complex patient on his caseload to access tailored treatment for their care needs. This involved liaison with external agencies and funders, as well as coordinating an admission with the crisis team to stabilise their physical health. His unwavering advocacy ensured this patient, whom normally would be in a marginalised group, accessed optimal care.

Danielle Midwood and Edwin Holmes, Community LD Nurse and Community Healthcare Support Worker
Dan and Edwin arrived to a routine visit to their shared patient and immediately recognised that he was not himself. Ten minutes into their visit, the patient had a seizure. They immediately attended to him, prioritised his safety and supported him after the seizure. They stayed with him to provide comfort, support and ensure he was safe and well. Thank you Dan and Edwin!

Donna Ferrand, Occupational Therapist, Living Well North East Derbyshire
Donna has gone above and beyond in supporting a patient in our service, as well as other staff involved in their care. When difficult conversations have happened, Donna has been there to help debrief and support staff, she has offered reassurance and support, whilst also keeping the patient's best interests at the forefront of her mind, exploring the most appropriate avenues of support, keeping lines of communication open, increasing the support offered by herself and being constant trusted professional. I have no doubts that Donna has enabled the person to remain engaged in the service and seek support.

Ezinne Ignatius, Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Radbourne Unit, Ward 35
Ezinne is a great OTA whose high levels of enthusiasm and commitment enables the men on Ward 35 engage in activities to help their recovery. In particular, in the recent exercise pilot aiming to offer 30 minutes of physical exercise daily across the acute wards, she facilitated sessions including table tennis, football, handball, walking, pool, dance and keep fit, and got many people involved. She is now leading the development of the exercise passport, co- produced with patients to promote exercise. Thank you Ezinne!

Charanya Kaliamoorthy, Specialty Doctor in South County CAMHS
Charanya came over to our Trust from India nearly a year ago. Charanya is in a new country, a new service and has had to orientate herself rapidly. Charanya has worked really had to understand the systems and support for children and young people's mental health in England. Charanya is a valuable member of the team and compliments the Multi Disciplinary Team with her skills and knowledge that she shares to help support the care provided to the children and families we serve. I admire how she builds positive relationships and makes a real contribution to the team. Madeleine has taken on a new role as clinical director of a diverse range of specialist services. She has done this with compassion, wisdom and the ability to develop personal relationships with each team. Her ability to see the best in people and encourage them to be their best (even where individual circumstances are difficult) is inspirational. She will always see what people can do rather than what they can't! Madeleine is not afraid to initiate difficult conversations in the best interests of the individual and of the trust and she does this with empathy and compassion.

Sarah Shirley, Registered Mental Health Nurse, Oak Ward
Sarah developed a robust plan to ensure I was able to demonstrate my competence and made herself readily accessible whenever I needed support, as my assessor. I felt Sarah consistently went above and beyond to ensure I was well supported, and I always found her approachable, encouraging, and willing to help. Sarah played an active role in my learning by identifying and creating opportunities that she believed would benefit my development. Wren Ward
As a student, it is easy to feel like an imposter coming into a new placement, but one thing I can say about coming here is that I never once felt like this. A "good placement" is usually categorised by how many learning opportunities you can achieve, but to me, I think the team makes just as much of a difference, and this is why Wren Ward has been my favourite placement so far. Not only have I learned so much, but the staff have been kinder to me than I can even express in words. Every person I have met here has, in some way, left a mark on my journey. Whether it was someone taking the time to teach me, trusting me to take the lead, answering what was probably my hundredth question of the day, making me laugh when I needed it, or simply checking in to see how I was doing. I will always be grateful that, at such an important point in my journey, I found myself at Wren Ward.

We recently had a student on placement with our team who, before leaving, created a personalised piece of person-centred artwork for each staff member. Every artwork featured the individual's name alongside three or four words that the student felt reflected their values and personal qualities. While I have always known how compassionate, dedicated and hardworking our staff are, seeing these qualities recognised and celebrated in such a thoughtful way was genuinely moving and took my breath away.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Tracey, Nathan, and the entire Olanzapine Depot Clinic team for welcoming me and providing such a valuable insight day. Before attending, I received a student information pack, which helped me prepare and understand the purpose of the clinic and the principles of olanzapine long-acting injectable treatment. During my visit, I had the opportunity to observe the complete patient journey, including pre- administration assessments, medication preparation, safe administration, and the essential post-injection monitoring process.
My mentor, Nathan, demonstrated exceptional patience throughout the day. He explained every stage calmly, encouraged me to ask questions, and ensured I understood the reasoning behind each procedure without making me feel rushed. He also took the time to show me post-administration monitoring, which significantly improved my understanding of the documentation process.
