What is perinatal occupational therapy?
Perinatal mental health occupational therapists are accredited allied health professionals with specialist perinatal training and experience; supporting expectant and new parents in managing the physical, emotional, and role changes of pregnancy and postpartum. We understand that becoming a parent is a major life transition and that mental health difficulties can make daily activities and routines more challenging.
“Occupational therapists provide practical support to help people experiencing perinatal mental health problems carry out the daily activities – ‘occupations’- that are important to them, their infants and families” (RCOT)
Perinatal occupational therapists support mothers to engage in the things they want and need to do, while adapting to the significant changes that pregnancy and parenthood bring to identity, roles, routines, and everyday life. We work alongside mothers to build confidence in their parenting role, develop strategies that support wellbeing and recovery, and empower them to adjust to this new stage of life.
Why might I need an occupational therapist?
Occupational therapy can help you create routines, add structure to your day, and find a healthy balance between caring for your baby, looking after yourself, and taking part in activities that are meaningful to you. We support mothers to build confidence, develop practical everyday skills, and find strategies to manage the challenges of motherhood.
Examples of how an occupational therapist can help:
- Establishing daily and weekly routines.
- Balancing your baby's needs with your own wellbeing and self-care.
- Reconnecting with hobbies, interests, and enjoyable activities.
- Building confidence and independence in everyday life.
- Developing practical skills such as:
- Shopping
- Cooking and meal planning
- Budgeting and money management
- Laundry and household tasks
- Organising appointments and responsibilities
- Using creative activities to express yourself and support wellbeing.
- Finding local groups, resources, and activities for you and your baby.
- Getting out into the community and building social connections.
- Exploring options for returning to work, education, or training.
- Developing new skills or rebuilding confidence in existing ones.
Our aim is to help you feel empowered, manage daily challenges more effectively, and build a life that supports both your wellbeing and your role as a parent.
What happens next?
After you have had your assessment with the perinatal team and if it is identified that occupational therapy may be beneficial, you will be offered an appointment. We will discuss your strengths, interests, skills, routines and daily activities, as well as your home environment and support network. It also provides an opportunity to discuss any activities or tasks that you are finding difficult and identify the areas where you would like support.
How long will I receive occupational therapy support?
Occupational therapy is guided by your individual goals and needs. Your occupational therapist will work with you to set motherhood goals and regularly review your progress during appointments. The length and number of sessions will vary for each person and will depend on what you need to help you achieve your goals and support your wellbeing during the perinatal period.
