Our electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) team, based at the Radbourne Unitprovides ECT to a small number of patients who have mental health problems, particularly severe depression or people who are experiencing a prolonged manic episode.

ECT is generally used when patients have a poor response to more conventional treatment options, and require rapid short term relief from severe symptoms.

The team has been accredited as excellent by the Electroconvulsive Therapy Accreditation Service (ECTAS), which is a system of external review done by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

To understand more about what electroconvulsive therapy is, why ECT is used for and what happens during the treatment, please visit the Mind website.
