The NHS has hailed 70 standout stars to mark its 70th birthday – and Trust Nursing Assistant Tony Longbone is one of them.

As part of the NHS's 70th birthday celebrations, patients, staff and public were asked to nominate Health and Care’s Top 70 Stars – people who have made an exceptional contribution to patient care, services and local communities.

Tony, who is a Nursing Assistant at Cubley Court Male on the Kingsway Hospital site, has worked at the Trust since August last year.

Top 70 Stars

The Top 70 Stars campaign was run by the NHS Confederation, with NHS England and NHS Improvement. Nominations were put to a public vote in May, resulting in the shortlist of 70 stars – including Tony. All 70 were invited to Confed18 in Manchester on Thursday, the Confederation’s annual conference, where the top 10 in the list were announced.

Tony, pictured (right) with Antony Tiernan of NHS England, said: “I had a wonderful day with equally wonderful people. Unfortunately I didn’t make the Top 10 but I am so proud to be recognised at such a level.”

Tony was nominated by former colleague Kate Pound, who said in her nomination: “What I love about Tony is that he shows you don’t need letters after your name or a high banding to make a difference to patients and improve their care. He has endless energy and works so hard in his own time to improve the experience of older patients. I have never heard Tony say no, somehow he just does it!”

Tony commented: “I love my job and working within the NHS. I have always been committed in any role that I’ve undertaken and since taking up my career in nursing I feel I have done my best to support patients and staff alike. It is incredibly humbling to be recognised for something that I gain so much from.

“I am inspired by hearing the voices of those I support to create mental health services that are relevant and meet their needs, I am driven by the passion to show that staff of all grades have the power to create change to both systems locally and nationally.”
